What is community?
Contributed by: Office of the Mayor on 2/28/2007

What is community? If you look up the word community in dictionary.com, you will find the following:

1.

A social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.

2.

A locality inhabited by such a group.

3.

A social, religious, occupational, or other group sharing common characteristics or interests and perceived or perceiving itself as distinct in some respect from the larger society within which it exists (usually prec. by the): the business community; the community of scholars.

If there was a Wheat Ridge specific dictionary you would also find the word "stakeholder" under community. Wheat Ridge is looking for a few good stakeholders.

Who is a stakeholder? A stakeholder can be young, or not so young, and any race, color or creed. A stakeholder can be a neighbor, a student or a local business owner. A stakeholder is anyone who desires to live and/or work in Wheat Ridge and stay a while. Stakeholders support each other and others in the community. Stakeholders agree to disagree and move on to the next issue. Stakeholders do not hold grudges. Stakeholders debate an issue, make a decision, and then go out for coffee. Stakeholders understand that while diversity is important, unity is more important.

Let's all be stakeholders in Wheat Ridge and continue to work as a team for the betterment of our community. Wheat Ridge 2020, the Arts Council, the Wheat Ridge Business District, the Wheat Ridge Housing Authority, the Wheat Ridge Foundation and other volunteer boards/commissions are working to improve Wheat Ridge. Feel free to get involved. And stay a while.

Mayor, thanks for a positive story about the many wonderful things that Wheat Ridge has to offer. A city is only as great as the people involved. I look forward to becoming more of a stakeholder in the coming months.

Mayor, next time you copy a definition out of a dictionary, pay a little more attention. Dictionary.com lists community as a noun. Your use of the noun "community" requires the preposition "a" to connect it to the verb "is". Your title should read, "What is a community?" For example, I assume you would never write "What is dog? or "What is bike?"

I think that it is great that there are so many volunteer opportunities in Wheat Ridge. I went to the city’s web site and looked around for specifics and found a volunteer opportunity section for the Senior Center and the Police Department. It would be nice to have a spot you could find all the available opportunities for the groups you mentioned. How do you get in touch with the Arts Council and other volunteer boards/commissions... and what is the Wheat Ridge Foundation? A link to other websites from the city webpage would be really helpful.
