Statement concerning Councilmember Womble
Contributed by: Office of the Mayor on 6/30/2007

I have stated repeatedly that as soon as Councilmember Womble went to arraignment in Jefferson County Court regarding misdemeanor telephone harassment phone calls to a fellow councilmember's employer, I would make a statement.

Based on the Wheat Ridge City Charter, an elected official is required to resign from his or her elected position only when charged and convicted of a felony. In any other situation, city council or the mayor's office cannot require or force an elected official to resign. However, there are two entities that can require Councilmember Womble to resign his position - Councilmember Womble himself or the citizens of District 1. Councilmember Womble needs to take a look inside and judge himself. He also needs to determine how effective he will be during the next two years if he remains on council.

All elected officials must understand that certain lines should never be crossed. Calling a fellow elected official's employer and lodging a fictitious complaint which has nothing to do with the employer or the city is totally unacceptable. We serve in elected positions to support the community, and personal livelihoods should not be put in jeopardy because of a political disagreement. Political disagreements are part of the public process. Citizens should not run for office if disagreements can get under their skin and cause them to act irrationally. As difficult as it may be, we must maintain professionalism. As mayor, I will not tolerate any action of this nature happening again under my watch.

At this point, we are at a crossroads. Revenge or allowing "point -counter point arguments" on the dais is not going to improve the current situation or enhance the image of Wheat Ridge. We can continue to focus on the actions of Councilmember Womble or we can all put this incident behind us, rise above the muck and focus on the issues and projects that benefit the community. I personally choose the latter.

I agree Mr Mayor! I am not a saint as none of us are. Acts such as this cannot be tolerated by anyone. If Mr. Womble had a problem with Ms. Berry, he should have worked it out with her in a public forum allowing the citizens to decide if she was in fact the person Mr. Womble claimed she was. I, for one will never hide behind anything if I believe a person is wrong and will place my name on every claim I make. To make false reports due to an unrelated matter as in this case is very wrong. I ask Mr. Womble to resign from the council for this act. There was a better way to handle his matters with Ms. Berry.
