Street Car Named Desire?
Contributed by: Office of the Mayor on 12/7/2006

Last month Councilmember Schulz and I met with Arvada and Denver elected officials to discuss FasTracks and the street cars that have been proposed for 38 th Ave. in Denver and Wheat Ridge.

Street cars would travel on
38th Ave and turn north on Harlan St. The proposed final destination would be the proposed Gold Line hub in Arvada. The street cars would be electric and would be in the current outer drive lanes (east and west bound) and, most likely, do not require the taking of any private property. The cost of a street car system is $26 million per mile. It was agreed, in principal, that the street cars should be in addition to the Gold Line, not instead of.

Arvada, Denver and Wheat Ridge agreed to sponsor and informational meeting with RTD early next year to discuss the street car options and the Gold Line with the community. More info to follow in 2007.

In the meantime, the public can continue submit their comments through the project website ( www.rtdgoldline.com), via phone by calling 303-299-6000, or by mailing comments to RTD FasTracks Gold Line, c/o GBSM, 600 17th St. #2020-S, Denver, CO 80202.
