Partners needed in advancing Wheat Ridge

Wheat Ridge 2020 is proud to be a partner in advancing Wheat Ridge as a vibrant and sustainable community. Started last year as a non-profit economic and community development organization, Wheat Ridge 2020 has plenty of work to do to realize the vision of a vibrant and sustainable community.

On a recent YourHub.com posting ("Wheat Ridge in the dumps" 10-5-06), the contributor noted that Wheat Ridge has been sliding in several areas.

The City Council, Mayor, and City Staff have been working very hard to address the issues mentioned. In 2005 the City commissioned and adopted the Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy (NRS). This study looked at how Wheat Ridge stacks up against other JeffersonCounty communities; and in fact, Wheat Ridge has fallen behind in several categories. The NRS recommendations are aimed at making positive change; and promoting, enhancing and advocating for change to make Wheat Ridge a great place to live, work, and play.

Also, five months ago, Wheat Ridge 2020 opened its doors with staff to promote sustainable residential, commercial, business, and community growth.Check out the web site www.wheatridge2020.org. You can also view the NRS on our website.

Wheat Ridge 2020 is working to address the issues raised, by completing development on 38th avenue, promoting mixed-use development like Belmar on the Wadsworth corridor, and bringing the pride back to Wheat Ridge.

Change does not happen overnight. The praised development at 32nd and Lowell was established over the course of twenty years. Does that mean we need to wait 20 years to see change in Wheat Ridge? No. Little and big changes can happen immediately. But comprehensive change takes time.

Wheat Ridge 2020 is pleased to see the investment the City Council, Mayor and City staff are making. In particular, ballot issues 2A and 2B are essential to continued city investment in our infrastructure and capital improvements. Wheat Ridge 2020 is pleased to support these proposals.

The City of Wheat Ridge cannot do it alone. Wheat Ridge 2020 cannot do it alone. We must join together as partners in the future of our Wheat Ridge. Our work needs the support, advocacy, and commitment of the community. Your family, the shop owners, and business leaders need to do their part in the neighborhoods and commercial areas, by removing graffiti, picking up trash, maintaining their properties, voicing their support at council meetings to promote positive changes to our outdated zoning and land use codes, and investing their time into our community.

As for our part, Wheat Ridge 2020 has launched several neighborhood initiatives such as dumpster days, neighborhood block party grants, landscape renovation grants and a tree-a-thon. In late October we will be launching several lending programs to help individuals and businesses invest in Wheat Ridge and help build on our community assets. Please call our office at 720-259-1030 if you would like to get involved.

You have noticed the issues, and with your help, we can make Wheat Ridge a great place to live and do business.
