'Leave it!' can be a lifesaver
Contributed by: Julie Warzecha on 8/19/2007

People sometimes ask: "Why should I take my dog to training classes?" The answer is that it can save their lives and here's a good story of how training did just that:

Hi, my name is Max Campbell and I'm a rat terrier mix who was rescued from euthanasia and adopted in October 2006 by my new family from Boulder.

My mommy, Georgie, took me to The Brown Dog School to learn my manners, gain confidence, have fun and socialize with others. One very important thing that our instructor, Julie, taught us was "LEAVE IT."

We practiced this a lot and it sure paid off! One day, when I was getting out of our van, I took off down the driveway after a deer that was across the street (I am very fast). My mommy immediately yelled, "LEAVE IT" as loud as she could. WOW, I heard that and stopped dead in my tracks, and returned home. My mom told me what a good boy I was!

There is no doubt that this lesson was and is a lifesaver and we owe it all to Julie for teaching it to us.

We love "LEAVE IT!"
