What do I want to be when I grow up? When I was seven I wanted to be a doctor, and then I realized that I could never give a person a shot. When I was twelve, I wanted to be an interior decorator, and then I realized I did not like decorating. Now, I am twenty, and I want to be a Public Relations Manager for an educational institution. Youth Leadership Jefferson County provided me with the opportunity to realize my true goals and potential during Arts and Media Day. Our class spent the day at News 4 where we learned about the communicative process of media. I gained a special insight into the filed, and I was able to establish a network of professionals who would assist me in achieving my future goals.
Youth Leadership Jefferson County (YLJC) develops the leadership potential of high school students through an innovative curriculum established by the West Chamber Serving Jefferson County Foundation. The nine-month program includes sessions focused on business, health, human services, public safety, justice, arts and media, education, and government. During these sessions, Jefferson County students interact with community leaders, investigate career options, and participate in hand-on activities that develop leadership skills. The leadership skills are further enforced as concepts such as teambuilding, ethics, communication, and character are applied to the sessions.
The establishment of YLJC fits the West Chamber Serving Jefferson County Foundation's goal of "developing leaders and establishing a workforce that improves our quality of life in Jefferson County." Other programs within the West Chamber include Leadership Jefferson County, Links for Learning, and Leadership Jefferson County Alumni Association. Through the West Chamber, the future of the Jefferson County community is bettered because leadership is developed early.
Growing up, I had many ideas about what I would like to do, but I had no experience in the fields of my interest. YLJC provided me with the opportunity to grow as a leader, and it also provided me with the opportunity to define my career goals: I participated in an internship in the Communication Services Department of Jefferson County Public Schools because of a contact I met during Arts and Media Day. My goals now have experience so I will be prepared when I finally grow up.
