Summer season of giving
Contributed by: Cheryl Brungardt on 3/24/2007

Wheat Ridge Grange has been distributing food as a Share Colorado host site for over 17 years. Volunteer participants from youngsters to seniors box, sort and distribute the food to share recipients once a month. Although the Share program is monthly, the members realize that families are not just trying to feed hungry children during the holidays when numerous food drives occur, but all year, especially in the summer.

With summer lunch programs available to families on free and reduced lunch at a limited number of sites during school break, children often go without on the weekends. With a $1,000 YourHub.com grant, Wheat Ridge Grange Share could purchase 200 Pay it Forward Boxes or 100 Pantry Boxes, full of staples including tuna, peanut butter, pastas, vegetables and fruits to feed children. This grant would help fill the gap between paydays and school lunch programs for numbers of families on the bubble.

Wheat Ridge Grange Share distributes the 4th Saturday morning of each month except during May, November and December, when distribution is the 3rd Saturday. Pre-registration is required. Participants pay $25plus 2 hours of volunteer time per share which includes a mix of meat, staples, fresh vegetables and fruits. Information on the Grange Share program: Elywn, 303-424-3542.
