All-out monster truck mom
Contributed by: Wendy Larson on 11/19/2006

Well, I don't know if it is me or my son who is more of the monster truck fanatic. I guess it's him. Last year for Halloween (2005) my son wanted to be Grave Digger. I made the truck out of papier mache to get all the correct curves, then hot glued black material onto it and finally handpainted and drew all the details. His lights even worked and were the notorious red glow. I have made a secret promise to never go that far again for another costume.

It all started when I took my son for his first show. He wasn't even 2. We loved cheering on the trucks and were adrenaline driven by the loud roar they made during their stunts. We've seen some rolls and outrageous driver participation to get the crowds going. There is nothing like the sound of a crowd going crazy because they know they have just witnessed something so frightening or crazy. I think my son chose Grave Digger just because he had the red lights, or maybe because he looked the scariest. He was too young to know that on that first night, he was the crowd favorite.

Truth be told, when I was pregnant I was desaprately wanting a girl, but now I couldn't imagine my life without my son. He has opened my eyes to a whole world, and it's not just to stop and smell the roses. I am very proud and love my son so much. I never knew the name of construction trucks, or why a train has the numbers that it does. It took my son's interest to educate and open my eyes a little more.

I am now working two jobs just to keep a roof over our heads, and am not even sure I will be the one to take my son to the show if we win (my hours are all over). I would be so sad to miss this moment with my son, but wouldn't want him to miss out on this opportunity just because we are hurting.

We just moved to Colorado from California in June and I have been looking for the Monster Truck listings since we have been here. I lucked out a little when I drove my son to his speech therapy. Sitting there on Colfax, just off of U.S. 70, is a monster truck. After picking up my son, I drove him by the truck and then went into the place to ask them if they raced and where could we see future shows. They no longer race, they said, but they did give me a few places where we might be able to see a show. We're luckier than most people because twice a week we can see a retired monster truck. They have no idea how happy that makes us just to see it there every time we drive by.

My son turns 5 in January and we'll see how far I go for his party. This year, the theme will be a monster truck party . The decorations will all be in place, I just have to think of the games and cake to be made. I guess creativity and my son are in my genes.

I was so happy when I opened the paper and saw your advertisement about the show. I instantly tore out the ad, came home and started to write. No, I am no great writer, but I hope we win this contest for obvious reasons. I would also cherish another outrageously great moment with my son, and hope that somehow you see a reason to choose us.

The all-out monster truck mom.
