my life in a nutshell
Contributed by: mary flechsig on 7/18/2007

When I was 2 years old my mother was told she had leukemia. I later learned this is a type of cancer. She was told she had a 5% chance of surviving this and should make a will. She however had other plans. She told who ever would listen that she had kids to raise and a degree to get. Not many people took her seriously and felt sorry for her high hopes. While going through chemo, her sister suddenly passed away and she and my dad adopted my now sister and brother. Even though she spent many weeks in the hospital she never let on just how sick she was. Everyone else came first and she handled the disease with courage and grace. Instead of crying, she laughed. She made others laugh as well. Basically, she laughed at the thought that cancer was stronger than she was. It just wasn't so. Against everything the doctors said, she beat her cancer. Doctors to this day call her a miracle. I call her my hero. My dad stood by her and us kids through it all. I think her sickness was harder on him. He didn't laugh as much as she did. He's more serious. I am now 11 years old and learned more than most people do in a lifetime about how important a positive attitude can be. She recieved her BS in Biology. I can't imagine 2 people more deserving than my mom and dad to be a king and queen for the day.
