Stecher bests field at Wheat Ridge Triathlon
Contributed by: Crawford Clark/YourHub.com on 7/27/2008

The second annual Wheat Ridge Outdoor Triathlon was held the morning of July 27 at Anderson Park, 4355 Field St., in Wheat Ridge.

Triathlete Mark Stecher, 59, of Denver, won the event posting a final time of 1 hour, 7 minutes and 39 seconds. Stecher beat 16 other men and women to win a free massage at the Whet Ridge recreation center.

The race consisted of a half-mile swim in the park's new 25-meter outdoor pool, followed by a 12-mile bike ride and a three-mile run on Clear Creek trail.

"We had a nice little local event with 16 competitors," Stecher said. "It's a small, local event."

Stetcher has been competing in triathlons since 1989 and said competes in has many as 24 triathlons a year.

Race coordinator Ian Montel was extremely satisfied with the event.

"Last year was our first year, we had a few hiccups to iron out," Montel said. "We're looking to grow it and make it a decent size annual event."

Montel added he was considering adding team and youth events to the triathlon in the future.

I witnessed this race and the bike portion was actually in traffic. So, the participants had to obey all traffic laws (stop signs, lights, rights-of-way, etc.) all the while trying to complete the course in good time. For those readers who are unaware, most triathlons have the bike courses on blocked off residential streets or on bike paths. Keeping that in mind, Mr. Stecher's completion time is impressive. 24 triathlons a year at any age is incredible! My hat is off to him.
