La Furia Rocks Rhode Island
Contributed by: Linda Bolander on 3/1/2008

All their hard work over the last month paid off. The La Furia Masters and Novice synchronized skating teams performed their best programs yet at the United States Synchronized Skating Championships.

The two teams packed skates, costumes, great attitudes, and all the determination they could muster and headed to Providence, Rhode Island, February 20th through the 23rd. Both teams had come back from qualifying in January's Sectional competition in Nashville to ramp up their skating just for this championship.

The Masters, coached by Stefano Stangalini and Debbie Minter, competed in the most competitive event they have ever been in, and placed 5th overall with one judge placing them first. Stangalini and Minter, also members of the team, are very pleased with the performance. "This team showcased one of the most challenging and fastest programs out there," says Stangalini. "Our cohesiveness was one of the best features, too. We love each other as a group and that showed on the ice."

Minter, coach of the Novice team, was also very proud of their 11th place finish skating to their showstopper "Guys and Dolls." "Like the Masters team, the Novices all skated very well, despite getting lost on the way to the event. They got there just in the nick of time and still performed a clean program." Minter says for a brand new Novice team, that's quite an accomplishment. The novice team is also coached by Jamy Wetzel Little.

And there's even better news--the season isn't over. Come out to the Ice Centre at the Promenade in Westminster on May 17th to see these fine synchro skaters, as well as freestyle skaters and ice dancers, at the spring ice show. Sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Figure Skating Club, the show will feature performers of all ages and ability levels who have worked hard all year to give their best.

The La Furia synchro teams will also be holding free open houses for skaters of all levels who are interested in being part of the large and successful La Furia program. They are scheduled April 15th and 22nd, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Ice Centre. So bring out your skates and plan to have a great time.

Additional open houses will be held at Apex and the University of Denver, dates to be announced. Auditions for the teams will be held in May, and those dates will be announced as soon as they become available. Check the La Furia website for more information, www.lafuriasynchro.com, or contact Coach Minter at sk8bug77@yahoo.com.
