WR Avalanche U13G challenges top-ranked team
Contributed by: Wheat Ridge Avalanche on 5/5/2008

On Saturday morning, the U13G Wheat Ridge Avalanche soccer team lined up for a battle against the visiting Littleton United squad. Littleton United brought in a league-leading 7-1-1 record to meet the Avalanche team that held a 5-1-2 record. What a battle it was!

Wheat Ridge struck first with a blazing shot from midfielder Courtney Munch. She was set up by Annie Browne with a quick pass coming from the center of the field to the left side of goal. Wheat Ridge established themselves as the aggressor throughout the remainder of the first half. Littleton did break through the tough defensive play of the Avalanche with about 15 minutes to play in the 1st half. Lauren Polivka, Perris Berggren, Micah Ohno, Carly Manahan and Alia were dominant on the Wheat Ridge defensive side of the field, with the exception of a lone goal against. Michelle Junk made several key saves to hold the score at 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Littleton was the team that jumped in front with the first goal after half. But Wheat Ridge came right back. Micah assisted to Katelin Blosser for a goal to re-tie the game. Strong play was shown by both sides as each team fought to control the game. Abby Osse and Annie worked furiously to control the midfield, with the help of Kayla Blosser, Hannah Hunter, Courtney and Tori Archuleta on the outsides. Gigi Kennedy, Jessica McGowan and Katelin applied great pressure in the attacking front working to take the game from Littleton. Katelin scored again on a pass from Courtney to put the Avalanche in the lead 3-2 with less than 10 minutes to play.

Littleton received a break on a penalty kick, scoring a goal off a deflection in front of the Wheat Ridge keeper. With the game tied 3-3, Littleton broke through for the win with a terrific shot from about 25 yards out on the left side of the box outside of the goal. Although defeated, the Avalanche put up a valiant effort against a strong quality opponent. The team has had a very successful season so far and are looking to continue to improve as a team each week. The Wheat Ridge Avalanche girls are now looking to use that same teamwork and determination as they prepare to finish off their season with a win in their final league game.
