WR Avalanche girls capture soccer championship
Contributed by: Wheat Ridge Avalanche on 6/2/2008

The Wheat Ridge Avalanche U13Girls soccer team took home the championship trophy from the Front Range Invitational Tournament held at the Air Force Academy this last weekend! The team played some very competitive and tough teams and fought through numerous injuries on the way to claiming their first team title!
On Friday evening the girls faced off against Colorado Storm and battled the wind, and long grass, as well as 16 determined opponents. The Avalanche struck first with a great goal from Annie Browne in the first half. The girls possessed the ball throughout the first half with Annie finding the net once again before half time. In the second half the Avalanche backline of Perris Berggren, Lauren Polivka, Alia, and stopper Micah Ohno shut down a strong Storm attack. The Avalanche took a 2-0 win.
On Saturday the team faced the Durango Craze in the morning. Again the girls jumped to an early lead with goals from Carly Manahan and Katelin Blosser. Assists came from Abby Osse, Tori Archuleta, and Micah. Once again the defense was impenetrable! The Avalanche were victorious by a score of 3-0.
Coming into the second game on Saturday, the team was a little physically beaten up. The Avalanche only had 12 of their 13 players available for the game. The play was physical and at times the Avalanche ended up with only 11 or 10 players able to be on the field of play. But the team supported each other and pushed to a 2-2 tie, giving them a 1st place seeding in their pool and qualifying them for the finals on Sunday.
In the championship match on Sunday, the girls faced a quality squad from Evergreen Stingers. With four players being taped for ankle injuries, 1 taped for a groin injury, and several other bumps and bruises - the team took the field determined and confident. Wheat Ridge took control of the game minutes in when goalkeeper Michelle Junk made a diving save on a well hit ball by the Stingers. The Avalanche immediately regained control with Annie scoring on a blazing shot from the top left of the penalty box to give the team a 1-0 lead. Katelin scored the next goal for the girls beforethe end of the first half. Once again the defenders played a substantial role as they shut down any attack from the Stingers. Kayla Blosser moved to stopper and with the help of Abby and Carly inside, and Courtney Munch, Gigi Kennedy and Tori outside, theycontrolled the momentum in the Avalanche's favor. Gigi applied outstanding pressure in the Avalanche's attack as she made several great runs on goal coming up just short of putting the ball in the net. The girls were playing the game of the year for them and would not be denied! The Avalanche put the game out of reach when Abby served Katelin a great crossing ball which Katelin touched to the back of the goal. The team completed their third shutout of the tournament as they finished with a 3-0 win!
Congratulation Wheat Ridge Avalanche - U13G F.R.I.T. Champions!!
