Farmers are 10-year-old league champions
Contributed by: Troy McKay on 7/14/2008

Congratulations to the Wheat Ridge Farmers. On June 29, they became the JCJBL 10-year-old second league champions. The Farmers qualified for the League tournament by finishing in first place in the Texas Division with a 16-2 regular season record.

On June 28, the team battled the Columbine Crushers and came away with a 12-10 victory. The Farmers jumped out to an early 9-4 lead behind the extra base hits of Kyle, Hunter and Tyler. The pitching combination of Mateo and Sylas proved too tough for the Crushers, with Mateo getting the win and Sylas the save.

The semi-final victory set up a duel with the Green Mountain Rams, who finished second to the Farmers during the regular season. In addition to being the rubber game of a season long 3 game series, the third meeting of the season between these two would determine the league champion. The Farmers started Trace on the mound and he battled for two-plus innings holding the Rams to 5 runs before Sylas came in to finish out the game. Sylas pitched the final four innings allowing only 4 runs while striking out 9 Rams.

In the top of the 3rd inning, Kyle snagged a sharp line for the first out of the inning and then flipped the ball to Mateo, covering second base for a timely double play.

From that point on, the Farmer bats took over after being silenced the first 2 innings. In the 3rd inning, Trace and Sylas each had run-scoring hits with Sylas doubling in Trace. In the 4th inning, the speedy legs of Kyle manufactured a third run. Heading to the 5th inning, the Farmers trailed 9-3 and then erupted for 5 runs to draw to within one of the Rams. After a walk to Tyler, a base hit by Trace and a walk to Sylas, the bases were loaded.

Mateo struck out swinging and then Alex drew a bases loaded walk to force the Rams' starting pitcher out of the game. On the first pitch thrown by the new pitcher, Kyle cracked a bases clearing triple to right field and later scored on a groundout by Austin. Sylas struck out the side in the top of the sixth to set the stage for the last half inning of the game. With the Farmers trailing 9-8, they had the top of the order due up. Tyler led off with a walk and a stolen base. Trace followed with an RBI single and advanced to second. Sylas singled to left, moving Trace to third. Mateo was intentionally walked to load the bases. Alex bounced the second pitch over the pitcher's head driving in a sliding Trace. The Farmers won in come-from behind-fashion. Congratulations on your League Championship.
