Voices calling from far away... saying 'you suck'

I hate the Eagles. Got a problem with that? After Emily Shull had the guts to admit her distain for Bob Seger for our Least Favorite Band contest, I feel safe admitting I hate a band of Seger's ilk.

The Eagles suck. Let me count the ways. First off, their song Hotel California is the most overplayed song in history. I've probably permanently damaged car stereos while slamming on buttons to get off stations that play that song. Let's take a quick look at the lyrics, shall we?

Her mind is Tiffany twisted
She's got the Mercedes bends
She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven't had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say
Welcome to the Hotel California

Huh? That makes no sense. Her mind is Tiffany twisted? Whaaaa? And why wouldn't they have wine since 1969 - except that it rhymes?

My family went to the band's Hell Freezes Over Tour in 1994 - their comeback tour according to this Web site. Well it wasn't much of a comeback. My brother and I - still under the power of our parents - sat in our seats with our hands over our eyes in dismay. The encores kept on comin' - and it was painful. I imagine myself saying (in my best whiney voice) "Moooooom, Daaaaaaaad, I have homework to dooooooooo. Can't we go hoooooome?"

The Eagles have developed sad followings, just like many other crappy bands. Apparently the town of Winslow, Arizona has a festival based on an Eagles song. The 8th Annual Standin' On The Corner Park Festival is September 29th and 30th. I joke not.

So what is it that elevates the Eagles from dislike to hate? Is it the incessant hum of Hotel California? Is it the fact that these aging men all appear to have had plastic surgery? Or is it the fact that they keep recording and touring long after their moment of relevance has passed? I'll go with all of the above.

He is indeed cool. I don't think many kids were woken up weekends with Frank Zappa blaring on the stereo. But that's what you get when you've got a plastic mom and dad.

Annie, your dad's cool. I heard a theory that the satanic church was started in 1969 and that the wine referred to Christ. If you look at the album cover very closely, you can see satan in the background prescribing viagra to Rush Limbaugh.

OK you little rat. You seem to imply that I actually like the Eagles. Oh no! They suck big time! We got the tickets for a Christmas gift and it was a generous gift at that. How could the giver have known that she was giving the gift of truly dreadful music at a premium cost? It was music. So we did it and it was fine. Not every band can be Death Can or Cream, eh? So don't try to paint mom and I as lame music people. We're about the coolest parents you ever had. Rock on pal! your dad

I'll give you the most over played song, but I have to disagree - somewhat - with they have all had plastic surgery. Have you taken a look at Joe Walsh ? - not a poster child for plastic surgery. He should leave the Eagles for good, stay solo or with the James Gang

Amen to the "most overplayed song." That, and that song Rob Thomas did with Carlos Santana a few years ago, which is still played everywhere. I heard it in a Goodwill store in Parker a couple weeks ago. I'm guessing, and this is a conservative estimate, that I've heard it somewhere around 1,000 times. And I don't even own the album. If Rob Thomas were in the same room with me and a hammer, there would be quite a mess.
