I've received my ballot in the mail, have you? There's a lot there to consider, but I prefer to keep my comments targeted on the Lakewood City Council and Mayoral races.
When you get up in the morning and sit at the kitchen table with your first cup of tea, coffee, Red Bull or whatever, take a few minutes to really think about our community. Imagine yourself going out the front door and picking up the newspaper. Do you feel safe?
Imagine getting into your car and driving to Red Rocks Community College or Colorado Christian University, or to work at the Federal Center, or the offices on Union. Is the traffic manageable? Are the streets in good condition?
Did you see any graffiti while driving your kids to school?
Did you enjoy your weekend hike on Green Mountain?
How was that dinner and a movie that you and your boyfriend had at Colorado Mills?
Remember ice skating last winter at Belmar? The rink is open again, you know.
I bet you have a story or two about a herd of deer or fox in the neighborhood. I do.
Isn't Lakewood a wonderful place to live? It's clean. It's safe. It's fun. It's beautiful and it's now.
If you love Lakewood (I'm third generation here), then vote for the people who favor keeping it vibrant and moving forward.
Please don't vote for the people who are running "against" something. It's just too easy to be negative. We don't need this community to be led by a bunch of grumpy people who are "against" just about everything. It's not what we're about here in Lakewood.
Please vote with your eyes wide open. Look around our community, see the progress, see the character, see the beauty, and vote for those who helped make it happen.

Well said again, Mikaela! After watching the debates and the negativity that some candiates seem to have about my hometown I was disgusted. I hope the citizens will elect a mayor and council who will continue the wonderful transformation Lakewood has experienced in the past 10 years.

Mikaela, In your new profile, you say you're a social liberal and a fiscal conservative, but you don't know a mold that fits it. As parties are concerned, I can't think of one that matches either. But have you ever heard of, or studied Milton Friedman? A democrat who influenced Reagan Republicans. I kinda think like him. While I'm spiritually, or religiously opposed to some liberal ideas, I believe gov't should stay out of the bedroom. Now, re abortion, I don't think that's a private matter, but maybe we shouldn't get into that? Thanks for the profile! You sound like an interesting young lady. I'm sure you're aware that there are other ways to be involved in politics, like campaign manager, etc.!

You need to write a profile Mikaela! I've lived here for almost 19 years, but grew up across town, in Aurora. I, too, prefer positive candidates, who have realistic approaches to the city's future based at least partially on the citizen demographic. Our demographic seems to be increasingly diverse, while maintaining a sense of common culture.
