Break out the 'Backlash' ...
Contributed by: Melissa Johnson   on 3/1/2007

It's officially Women's History Month and the opportunities to celebrate and educate are endless. I'll spend the month rereading my worn out copy of Backlash and visiting some of the Denver-area tourist attractions centered on women's history, as mentioned in this month's issue of the Boulder Women's Magazine. But I'll also keep watch of something I try to monitor everyday - women in the news. Today's media outlets are providing us with examples of good coverage, bad coverage and ugly coverage. It goes without saying Anna Nicole Smith and Britney Spears are cornered helplessly in the bad and the ugly coverage section. A New York Times article entitled, Updating an Old Way to Leave a Baby on a Doorstep, however, offered a breath of fresh air today with a story about how Rome is becoming proactive in woman and child care by revamping traditional "baby drop off" methods in a way that is confidential for the mother and safe for the baby. Taking care of women and taking care of children...who would have thought that's a good idea?
