Dr. Raval's reaction to Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp.'s announcement that they plan to introduce Reloxin into the market next year, pending FDA approval is nothing less than "enthusiastic".He states that he is "
looking forward to offering patients more than one product optionto treat wrinkles such as forehead lines, 'crow's feet' and frown lines".
He adds, "
If Reloxin will be significantly less expensive than BOTOX is now, the cost reduction will outweigh the importance of recent reports of Reloxin's slightly inferior differences to BOTOX".
These differences include "A 'greater diffusion rate' (likelihood of spreading), whichcouldlead to greater complications and the 'slightly shorter infusion rate' (length product lasts), of 2.5 months for Reloxin vs. 3 months for BOTOX".
BOTOX injections are the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the U.S., with 4 million injections in 2006. During this brief procedure, BOTOX is injected into the muscles around frown lines in the forehead, lips, around the nose or sides of the chin using a very fine needle to minimize discomfort. You may be asked to squint, frown and raise your eyebrows to identify where the injections will be placed to be most effective.
Ordinarily, there is little or no bruising, bleeding, pain, or discomfort from a BOTOX injection. Bruising and swelling may be visible in some patients at points of injections and can last up to a day or two. Icing the area repeatedly for short periods immediately after your injections will reduce swelling if you are prone to swelling. Makeup may be applied following your treatment. You may return to work immediately following treatment.
The results of your treatment are best seen after a weeks and will last three to six months or longer. As you continue BOTOX treatments, each subsequent treatment will last longer and this is an important reason to have your next treatment as soon as any muscular function returns.
