Many theories, and suppositions are ahead of the findings in "the fossil record". Clearly, the early European branch of homo habilis, erectus, etc. must have commonly suffered from phocomelia (where you have foreshortened upper limbs, flippers, or no limbs at all, like in people exposed to thalidomide while still in the womb). This would explain why the europeans invented a very popular game in which they use their head and feet, but not their arms. I have today concluded that there is no other logical explanation for soccer.
