Inside the Mind of Oreety: Free Thinkers' Manifest
At times controversial, and other times merely amusing and borderline insane, this blog shall contain the rantings, thoughts, aspirations and musings of a self-proclaimed "free thinker". Politics, philosophy, religion, and...

Genocide & Apathy: its intertwined journey

" Never again" the Jews proclaimed as they walked out of the ashes of Aushwitz- Birchenau, Buchenwald and all the other camps of terror, death, famine and injustice.

Such a thought, such a proclamation undoubtedly uttered and escaping out of the trembling mouths of countless individuals who have suffered at the hands of evil; the Armenians, Rwandans, and now the victims of Darfur.

The world watches, immobilized and thinking, "Such a calamity, what sorrow, but what can a mere person do under such circumstances?" Thus, one continues to view the atrocities unfolding, to take another breath, as those whom are helpless are taking their last.

The world is not in search of a savior, or a mythological creature that shall render all that is the epitome of injustice in this world nullified, but we are in search of human compassion and words to be not solely founded upon thoughts, but actions.

It is always far too easy to shed a tear for the innocent victims of genocide, but even far easier to justify one's apathy to a lack of ability to make a difference.

We are even unable to label such evil as "genocide" lest a sufficient amount of deaths have accrued. What world do we inhabit that can solely define an occurrence by an exponentially growing death rate, when the mere fact that individuals are being slain due to their ethnic and religious differences is rather enough to dictate action?

Passivity in the face of injustice then becomes an accomplice to those wielding weapons and perpetrating evil. Apathy is the sword, that which facilitates maximum human suffering and cruelty is the mere driving force of the weapon.

Does our country that prides itself upon the concept of liberty, peace, happiness and justice for all solely come to the aid and imposes "sanctions" when the death toll rises to 400,000 and counting?

This is not a lecture on the apathetic society we reside within, or the collective ignorance of our leaders whom solely find it worthy to combat a cause when it is already too late for those who have perished at the hands of evil. This is merely a wake up call for those who think that death solely occurs on the doorstep of impoverished countries; those "far-away" countries that have nothing to do with our day-to-day living.

But genocide and oppression, be it within the comfortable confines of our "civilized society" or in the desert fields of a foreign nation affects us all. We are all constructed of the same thread, though our differences render us unique, our commonalities should unite humanity to fight for a singular and veritable cause: FREEDOM.
