Returning to the Rockies
After two looooong and painful years in the crazy city of Philly, Shanna is making the trek home to Colorado, land of Mexican food, environmentalists, a golden dome, and the beautiful and wondrous Rocky Mountains. This blog follows her as she plans her return to Lakewood, the city of her birth, and her challenges and tribulations along the way. Fond memories of growing up in the foothills, lists of what she's missed about CO (and won't miss about Philadelphia), and random thoughts...what more would you expect from a Colorado College graduate?

It's getting close! My move is planned in t minus 6 weeks. I am so incredibly excited; I've got Colorado on mah mind!
However, this is becoming WAY more complicated than I could have hope. I'm no longer a college student, fine with moving wherever and crashing on couches and in dorms (I have cats!). I'm no longer a grad student, ok with having a few weeks between "real jobs" because my financial aid will cover my rent. I've entered the real world, and I'm in for a bumpy ride, or so it appears.
I HATE moving. This is such a convoluted process.
First, I had to figure out which route we'd take. Fairly easy, and I even get to stop in and see a close friend on the way. Next was the hotel reservations. Not so easy. I'm fine with stopping anywhere that takes my feline children. My sister is not the same way; she's helping me drive out, so she calls the shots. Let me tell you; there are VERY few hotels between Philly and Denver that are *hotels,* have fitness centers, and also accepts cats (and the ones that do charge ridiculous fees! $150 per night per pet?!?!?!). I don't mind paying a huge deposit since my kiddos are well behaved, but COME ON! Finally, after more than 75 phone calls (thank goodness for free long distance), I have arrangements made for the trip out.
Well, except for my stuff. See, there isn't enough room in a Uhaul up front for 2 people, 2 cats (in carriers), 2 litterboxes, and a few overnight/until I get an apartment suitcases. So I've decided to go with one of those companies where you pack it, they drive it. Easy choice, and I'm set, right? Not so. I know I'm going *somewhere* in the Denver metro area, but where exactly? No clue. I'm going to wait until I get a job until I get an apartment, and I can't very well make this reservation for space in a trailer without somewhere to drop it off. So I'm researching storage facilities, local in-town Uhaul costs, etc. But they also have a "Relo-Cube" which costs about a hundred bucks a month to store, and that would make it easier; only one loading/unloading instead of two (I love my friends, but there is only so much I can ask of them!). But now the important questions; will my stuff all fit in one cube (the same price as the trailer space) or will I need two (much more expensive)? This is like some horrible, demented game of tetris! And I was never so good with tetris...
Oh well. I WILL get it figured out, I will. I have some semblance of faith in both my own abilities, as well as in my OCD and anxiety towards pushing me into getting this done.
Now, I just need to find a job (hire me please!) and then an apartment near by, and hope my car holds up for the trip out. That isn't so much to do...I *am* a Coloradan after all!

Just breathe ... it will be over soon! Yikes, 150 per pet deposit?? You better make sure your sis appreciates the fitness centers! Maybe you should get some of those space bags that you use a vacuum with to flatten your clothes and bedding and such to make room.
