My last article was almost two months ago. How could time go by so fast when I'm on island time? Well, it could have been the trip to Colorado to visit the grandchildren and their new puppy. It could be that I'm busy thinking about our upcoming move. Yes, another move in less than six months. Don't get too excited, folks. I will still be on an island and I will still share my Island life with anyone who wants to read about it.
We are moving to another island in the San Juans....Lopez Island. Lopez Island is where my husband works and, although he still likes riding the ferry, the fall ferry schedule is not cooperating with his need to be at work on time. Luckily, I anticipated this and did not unpack about 50% of the boxes when we moved from Golden.
Lopez Island is the "friendly" island. Everyone, and I mean everyone, waves when you drive by them. They can be bicycling on the road, walking on the road, or driving past you. Everyone waves. I love it!
Lopez Island has no town. It does, however, have a quaint village. We will live about ten miles from the village. We will only be one mile from work. Who do you think will get the car?
Leaving Friday Harbor on San Juan Island is a little sad. I was finally getting to know folks in town as well as finding my way around. The good thing is, I can island hop my way back for FREE if I walk on the ferry. Now that I know folks in Friday Harbor and Orcas Island, I plan on island hopping a lot. I will especially visit San Juan Island when the Orca Whales return next summer. Spending time at Lime Kiln State Park was one of my favorite things to do. Seeing the Orcas almost every time I visited was simply breathtaking and lucky.
The move to Lopez Island will be a good one for us. My husband will have an easier, much easier, commute. We will be able to spend more time together as he will not have ferry schedules to deal with. Most of all, we will have a 2-bedroom, 2-bath home on two acres instead of the studio we now live in.We will be able to accommodate family and friends who visit us and we are happy to do so.
All of the islands have wonderful people living on them. Everyone is welcoming and always offering to help out in any way that they can. Much like Golden, there is community spirit all around.
I never thought my dream of some day living on an island would become a reality, let alone having the experience of living on two islands! What dreams would you like to become a reality for you? Like me, you may one day have the chance to make your dreams come true. I offer you this advice...Go For It!
